An exciting opening game of the new WSL season

The first of October at 12:30 (UK time) the time had finally come. The new Barclays WSL season started with a game between Aston Villa vs. Manchester United. Aston Villa was the surprise of last season, when they finished 5th and really pushed the traditional top teams in games. Manchester United on the other hand lost some of their star players Alessia Russo and Ona Battle this summer and want to improve on their second place finish of last season.

Goalkeeping at it’s finest

The first half kicked off after a minute of silence for Maddie Cusack, who tragically lost her life last week. In the 5th minute Lehmann had the first chance of the game, followed by a great shot from Lucy Staniforth that forced Mary Earps to make an early save. However, after the opening spell by Aston Villa, Manchester United found their feet and especially the physicality of Geyse caused some troubles for the Aston Villa midfield/defence. Lucy Parker got an early yellow card (12’) and Van Domselaar produced an absolute top save to deny Geyse her first WSL goal.

Geyse causing problems

Aston Villa had trouble playing through the midfield, and even some good actions for Laura Blinkilde-Brown couldn’t really move play forward, where Rachel Daly was literally standing on an island. However, Daly had a great chance after a very well taken corner by Staniforth but her header went wide. Straight after it was again Geyse who showed her physicality and caused all sorts of problems which led to a second yellow, this time for Rachel Corsie (26’). Despite the struggles Aston Villa had when being on the ball, the biggest opportunity of the first half was theirs as a counter attack saw Alisha Lehmann having a wonderful opportunity but her shot didn’t get off.

Ebony Salmon impact

During the half-time break Carla Ward made one substitution that saw Ebony Salmon mark her return to the WSL. With more bodies up front, Aston Villa started the second half well, but it was evident that their midfield lacked some pace on and off the ball. Daphne van Domselaar showed once again how good a goalkeeper she is when she stopped a well-struck shot of Ella Toone (51’).

Aston Villa had some really positive pieces of play, however were unable to really create chances. A bit of concern came over the public when Daly went down, when she got stamped on her foot, but luckily she could continue. Straight after some good play from Salmon saw Aston Villa get a corner, which ended with a Daly shot that hit the top off the bar. A few minutes later Daly called for a penalty as a 1-v-1 with Maya Le Tissier saw her going down in the penalty box, but the referee was unmoved. Just when things were looking up for Aston Villa, Kirsty Hanson got an unlucky red card for dangerous play. However, Aston Villa responded remarkably well with Parker storming through the midfield, passing the ball into the box where (who else) Daly marked her first goal of the new season (76’).

Manchester United’s late goals

With 10 vs. 11 things were always going to be difficult and after a good chance for substitute Nikita Parris, Lucia Garcia managed to score the equalizer from a set piece scramble (1-1). Aston Villa tried to hold on, but Manchester United were piling on the pressure to force a win and after a once again super save by van Domselaar they were rewarded in injury time. A deflected cross from Parris fell neatly on the head of Rachel Williams who scored the 1-2. Once again Manchester United showed that they have the strength and squad depth to score late in games.
