The end: Chelsea capture the title on goal difference after a remarkable comeback in the last 3 games

Here it is, the Barclays WSL has come to and end. After 22 rounds, with some of the most incredible games ever seen in the WSL it was Chelsea who captured their fifth straight WSL title. In the end Emma Hayes does have some silverware in her last season as the Chelsea manager, however only 2,5 weeks ago this title seemed far out of their hands. After Chelsea’s loss against Liverpool, it looked like Manchester City could give Steph Houghton the perfect end to her career, with another WSL title. However, an injury time loss to Arsenal, a big Chelsea win against Bristol City, and the loss of goalscorer Bunny Shaw saw them eventually fall short on goal difference. The last weekend of the WSL seemed to be one of real contest with Chelsea playing Manchester United at Old Trafford and Manchester City playing against Aston Villa in the last game of Carla Ward’s managerial career at the club. However, real tension never really happened as Chelsea absolutely humbled Manchester United on their home turf and be up 5-0 at the half time break. Manchester City on the other hand, who already needed to score more goals than Chelsea found it difficult to score, and in the last 2 games of the season the loss of goalscorer Bunny Shaw was really felt. A look back at some of the most remarkable results this season will be published online soon, so keep out for that.

An overview of all the results of the games played during the weekend + Chelsea’s midweek game , can be found below.

WSL conclusion

A special mentioning in the final standings must go out to Matt Beard’s Liverpool team. They have exceeded the expectations of most, to finish in fourth place, and have really shown this season they can compete with any top team on a given day. They managed to win against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United (twice), so they will definately be looking to progress on this curve. With the mid table teams growing so quickly, next season the WSL will only be a tougher and better competition. Which in the end will benefitial to all teams. There is simply just no place for errors anymore, and losing against a lower table team might be even costier than winning against your title contender.
