Week 16 – Round up of the WSL

In a weekend that saw Chelsea win the first prize of the season, thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Hasegawa (Manchester City), there were only 4 Women’s Super League games played.

The Women’s Football Blog game of the weekend

This week’s Women’s Football Blog game of the weekend delivered all the excitement fans could hope for. Liverpool put on a commanding display at home, securing a 2-0 lead before the break.

The breakthrough came from star player Olivia Smith, who showcased brilliant individual skill to bypass Tullis-Joyce and fire Liverpool ahead. Just before half-time, Fuka Nagano doubled the advantage, capping off a superb counter-attack led by Sam Kerr.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Liverpool controlling possession while Manchester United struggled to create clear-cut chances. In the 67th minute, Smith stepped up to convert a penalty, putting the hosts 3-0 ahead and all but sealing the result.

United found a late consolation through Maya Le Tissier, but the damage was done. The defeat proves costly for Marc Skinner’s side, who drop to third in the table, edged out by Arsenal on goal difference.

Low table Battle: Crystal Palace vs. Aston Villa

Crystal Palace have thrown the Women’s Super League relegation fight wide open with a crucial 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, closing the gap at the bottom to just one point.

Dutch duo Aniek Nouwen and Ashleigh Weerden put Palace in control, with Nouwen marking her debut in style after returning from a long-term injury. Villa responded late through Lucy Parker, but a costly error from goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo allowed Katie Stengel to seal the win in added time.

It was only Palace’s second league victory of the season—and the first under new boss Leif Smerud. The Norwegian manager faces a tough task to keep them in the WSL, but with Leicester City just three points ahead and key fixtures against Everton, West Ham, and Leicester still to come, Palace’s survival hopes have been reignited.

Meanwhile, Villa’s struggles continue under Natalia Arroyo, with their fifth straight defeat piling more pressure on their fight to stay up.
