It’s the final week of the Barclay’s WSL. On Wednesday the 15th of May, Tottenham Hotspur play Chelsea at 19:15 in a game that could have a major impact in the title race. A win for Tottenham Hotspur would mean that Manchester City only need 1 point from their game against Aston Villa on the weekend, to secure the title. In case of a draw or a Chelsea win, the title race would go down to the wire and Manchester City would need a win (in case of a draw) or a win and lots of goals (in case of a Chelsea win). Chelsea of course needs to win both games, but this won’t be an easy task as they play Tottenham Hotspur (away) and Manchester United (away). Both these teams will play on the weekend of the 12th of May in the FA Cup final, but they will have a major impact on the outcome of the WSL season. Will it be a send off for Emma Hayes, Fran Kirby and Maren Mjelde with yet another WSL title, or will the retirering Steph Houghton get the send off dreams, while lifting the trophy for Manchester City? There is everything to play for!
Nevertheless, this season of the Barclays WSL has been incredibly exciting, with teams like Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur really pushing the traditional top 3/4 teams this season. It’s also the season where attendances have gone through the roof, and clubs really start to market their home games. It’s another step forward, in the fast-moving women’s football world. And where one season almost closes, new opportunites and the new season will be just around the corner.
