Lots of goals and crucial wins for the top 3
Week 15 of the WSL was filled with goals and important victories for the top 3. The weekend started with a match between Manchester City and Everton, and it was quite evident that Manchester City didn’t get out of the international break very fluent. A lot of misplaced passes and some sloppy finishing saw the Citizens getting a small win over Everton. However, the goal of the day definitely came from Bennison (Everton) who put her shot top bins over Kheating, to try and get Everton back in the game.
Sunday started of with the North London Derby (NLD) between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in a, once again, sold-out Emirates stadium. Arsenal started the game well, and created a lot of corners and crossing opportunities, however once again they lacked creativity and decisive finishing in the final third to get on the scoreboard. Quite quickly after the break they finally managed to get the breakthrough, as a pass from Kim Little found Beth Mead who had a sublime first touch and managed to squeeze the ball back to Alessia Russo for an easy finish. The Gunners managed to hold on to the lead to get a clean sheet, another win and the 7th consecutive home-win this season.
As the top 3 all managed to get vital three points, Manchester United once again failed to get the 3 points, and they are now in 4th place with the same amount of points as Liverpool, who got a good win over Aston Villa. However, it was Brighton & Hove Albion who most likely have gained the most confidence this weekend as they hammered relegation compatriots Bristol City 3-7. Brighton started very well and went into the half-time break with 2 goal lead due to goals of Terland and Bremer, however Bristol City got back into the game via a spectacular Megan Connolly free-kick inmediately after the break. However, Brigthon got it together and scored twice in quick succession to get the comfortable 1-4 lead. What happened then was nothing short of remarkable as Bristol City managed to score 2 goals in 3 minutes to get back to 3-4, and for the 20minutes after they tried to get their equalizing goal. Yet, a 89th minute goal secured the victory for Brighton and energy really drained out of the Bristol City defence as they conceded 2 goals more in injury-time. The win saw Brighton go from 11th to 9th in the standings and saw Bristol City get into deeper relegation troubles.
