The tale of given and not given penalties
Week 13 of the Barclays WSL has come to end, and once again the results were anything but to be expected. In a London derby, that saw Leah Williamson returning to the starting line-up, West Ham United stunned Arsenal by winning at their home ground with 2-1. Arsenal once again struggled with the low block of their opponent, as well as the fact that finishing and decision making in the final third lacked confidence. A big shout for a penalty in the first half, after multiple West Ham players handeled the ball with their hands inside the box, let to nothing. Fast forward to the second half, Arsenal came out sloppy and they lost complete control. West Ham United, sparked by the work ethic of their midfield players Gorry and Hayashi, scored twice in quick succession and never looking back.
The late night game saw Chelsea win with 3-0 at Kingsmeadow over Everton. However, as the end result might look convincing, the way Chelsea played was far from that. After a strangely awarded penalty in the first half, after an apparent foul from Wheeler on Reiten, Chelsea were rewarded a penalty again in the second half for what looked very much like a dive by Ramirez in a battle with Wheeler. As Manchester City managed to get a late win over Leicester City, by two wonder goals by Hemp and Kelly, it’s very much Arsenal that has left the title race for now. They are now 3 points behind Manchester City and 6[points behind Chelsea, who for now look like the two teams to be battle it out for the title in this years WSL.
