Week 22 – Round up of the WSL

And just like that, the season is over. After 22 weeks of exciting Women’s Super League football, it’s Chelsea who are crowned champions. Arsenal and Manchester United claim the Champions League qualifying spots, ánd Crystal Palace are relegated. The season has flown by, with some surprising results along the way. But one thing is crystal clear: the way Sonia Bompastor has taken over from Emma Hayes and led Chelsea to an undefeated WSL season is absolutely astonishing.

A special mention also goes out to Aston Villa, who had been battling the relegation zone for most of the season, but found an astonishing round of form to finish with 5 wins and get up to 6th place in the table.

On an individual note, Shekeira Martinez from West Ham United only played in the WSL for half a season, but found the back of the net 10 times and finished fourth in the goalscorers table. An incredible acomplishment.

At the Women’s Football Blog, we will now switch our attention fully to the upcoming Nations League games, as well as Euro 2025 this summer. Some exciting international football awaits us, and will be here to cover it all.

The Women’s Football Blog game of the weekend

The Women’s Football Blog game of the week featured the battle for second place between Arsenal and Manchester United. Arsenal started brightly, as Chloe Kelly put the ball in the back of the net after just 1 minute and 56 seconds. However, United responded quickly, with Ella Toone heading in from a corner. Once again, it looked like the Arsenal defence wasn’t up for the challenge. Arsenal had a big chance through Leonhardsen-Maanum, but she pulled her shot wide. The game went back and forth, but at half-time the teams were level at 1-1.

After the break, Arsenal came out with blazing speed. First, it was Mariona Caldentey who neatly tucked away a penalty into the bottom corner, before Leonhardsen-Maanum and Kim Little found the back of the net to give Arsenal a 4-1 lead. Everything pointed towards a comfortable win for the Gunners, but in the 70th minute Elisabeth Terland pulled one back for United, and a penalty from Maya Le Tissier made it 4-3.

After some anxious moments—and roughly five or six offside calls against Stina Blackstenius—Arsenal managed to hold on and secure second place.
