It’s time for week 2 of the WSL

It's time for week 2 of the WSL

After the strong performances of English teams in the Champions League midweek, attention now shifts to the second week of the Barclays WSL. Chelsea kicks off the weekend again, playing a Friday night match, this time across London against newly promoted Crystal Palace.

There won’t be any games on Saturday, but Sunday promises a full schedule. The action starts with Manchester City facing Brighton & Hove Albion. Brighton impressed last week, so it will be interesting to see how they perform against one of the title favourites, Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will aim to continue their good form with a short trip to Everton. After a disastrous first-week performance, Everton will be eager to bounce back. Unfortunately for manager Brian Sorensen, Aurora Galli has been ruled out with an ACL injury, and Mel Lawley will also be missing for a few weeks due to a broken arm.

Arsenal, fresh off their impressive performance against BK Häcken on Thursday, face a challenging away trip to Leicester City. With so few games in the WSL, every point is crucial. Arsenal will be looking to secure four points from their opening two matches to ensure a better start than last season.

The remaining matches of the weekend will see Liverpool travel to face West Ham United. West Ham is one of the teams predicted to struggle this season, and their opening week performance did little to change that perception. It will be a tough challenge for them to take points from Liverpool, who are looking to build on the strong foundations they laid last season.

The final game of the weekend features Aston Villa against Tottenham Hotspur. Both teams impressed in their opening matches, with Aston Villa putting in a solid performance against Chelsea, while Tottenham faced an easier opponent on paper in Crystal Palace. This match promises to be an exciting contest, as both teams will be eager to stay close to the top of the table throughout the season.

The game of the weekend

The Women’s Football Blog’s game of the weekend is Manchester City vs. Brighton & Hove Albion. Manchester City boasts one of the strongest squads in the WSL, with Vivianne Miedema already making her mark by scoring goals. It’s going to be a tough challenge for any team to break them down.

However, Brighton & Hove Albion impressed in their week 1 performance against Everton, with Kiko Seiki delivering a debut to remember. They’ve made some exciting signings over the summer, making this match even more intriguing. Will Brighton be able to pull off an upset, or will Manchester City prove once again that they are the team to beat?
