The 2022 Copa América Femenina was the 9th edition of this tournament and was held in Colombia from 8-30 July 2022. The tournament served as the CONMEBOL qualifiers for the Women’s World Cup 2023, the 2023 Pan American Games and the football tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics in France. The two finalists of this competition would be the South American teams representing the CONMEBOL at the Olympics.
Group stage draw
The draw consisted of four pots, with two teams in each of the pots based on the world rankings. Colombia and Brazil were seeded and therefore not drawn in the pots. Hence, each group would consist of 5 teams.

The tournament
In group A Colombia showed why they were the seeded team, as they won all 4 games against Paraguay (4-2), Bolivia (3-0), Ecuador (2-1) and Chile (4-0). They were joined by Paraguay, who won three games and secured a very important injury-time victory in the last group stage match.
Similar as to group A, in Group B Brazil showed they are the best team in South America. Winning all 4 group games with a goal difference of 17 goals scored and 0 conceeded. The beat Argentina (4-0), Peru (4-0), Uruguay (5-0) and Venezuela (4-0). They were joined in the top two by Argentina, who managed to win a deciding last group game against Venezuela (1-0) to advance within the tournament.
The Knockout Stage
The semi-finals of the tournament saw Colombia being drawn against Argentina, and getting a 1-0 win by a Linda Caicedo goal. The second semi-final saw Brazil beating Paraguay (2-0) due to two first half goals by Ary Borges and Bia Zaneratto. Both Colombia and Brazil qualified for the finals of this tournament, as well as the Women’s World Cup ánd the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The third place match saw Argentina playing Paraguay and obtaining a 3-1 win (two injury time goals). Argentina therefore became the third team qualified for the Women’s World Cup, whereas Paraguay joined the fifth placed team in the inter-confederation play-offs.
The fifth place match was decided on pentalties after Venezuela scored the equalizer in injury time. However in the penalty serie Chile scored 4 out of 5, whereas Venezuela started of with two misses, which proved costly.
The Final
The final was held on the 30th of July 2022 in front of 28.000 fans. In a close game Brazil scored a penalty in the 39th minute, which ultimately meant they would win the tournament.
