The Nations League Finals
The four teams participating in the final were based on the group wins in the regular Nations League competition. These four teams were:
- Netherlands (group A1)
- France (group A2)
- Germany (group A3)
- Spain (group A4)
The semi-finals
The semi-finals consisted of two one-legged games to determine who would go through to the final, and who would play in the 3rd place game. On 23rd of February Spain won against the Netherlands (3-0), thanks to goals of Hermoso, Bonmatí and Battle. The difference in class in this game was enormous, however the two goals in quick succession just before the break were the dagger into the Dutch hearts.
The other semi-final was France against Germany, which saw France win (2-1). This really was a game of two-halves as France dominated the first half, and Germany dominated the second half. In the end, France won and went on to play the final. However, this also meant that the 3rd place match still would hold one ticket for the Olympics, so the Netherlands and Germany had all to play for.
The Final
The final was held on the 28th of February in front of more than 32.000 fans. Spain once again showed why they are the best women’s team in Europe at the moment. They won 2-0, with goals by Bonmatí and Caldentey, and therefore were crowned the inaugural Nations League winners ánd they picked up a ticket to Paris 2024.
Strange enough, the third place match was played after the final, and was a real battle for the final Olympic ticket. However, the Dutch team was depleted with injuries, and in the end it showed as Germany scored two goals in quick succession in the second half. Germany therefore joins France and Spain as the teams going to the Olympic Games.
