Women's Football at the Olympic Games

As we edge closer to the summer of 2024, the world’s eyes are set to turn towards Paris, France, host of the forthcoming Olympic Games. In total 12 teams will participate to compete for the golden medal and a spot in sporting history. France, by virtue of hosting, has already secured its spot in the competition. The remaining slots are distributed across various football confederations, with two spots allocated to each, save for the OFC, which is awarded one slot. This distribution ensures a global representation and a showcase of the finest talent from every corner of the world.

Since its debut as an official Olympic event at the 1996 Atlanta Games in the United States, women’s football has been a stage for athleticism, strategy, and national pride, without the age restrictions seen in men’s teams. Over the years, the United States women’s football team has set a gold standard, quite literally, with an impressive tally of four gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, earning them the title of the most decorated team in the event’s history.

For enthusiasts keen to understand the intricacies of the qualification process for each confederation, a detailed overview will be published swiftly.
