Week 17 - Round up of the WSL

Arsenal produced a statement win at the Emirates winning 4-0 over Liverpool, whereas an arbitrary fault majorly impacted the game between Manchester City and Chelsea.

The Women’s Football Blog game of the weekend

This week’s Women’s Football Blog game of the weekend was the third meeting between Manchester City and Chelsea within a week. City came flying out of the blocks, with Kerolin proving almost unplayable in the early stages. Chelsea struggled to contain her, and after a string of missed chances, it was Kerolin who finally made the breakthrough. Driving into a crowded penalty area, she picked her spot perfectly, bending the ball into the far bottom corner.

Controversy followed shortly after. A foul by Millie Bright on the edge of the Chelsea box saw the loose ball drop invitingly to Jess Park, who curled a stunning strike over Hannah Hampton. But just as Park wheeled away in celebration, the referee blew for the earlier foul — denying City the advantage and disallowing the goal. The resulting free kick rattled the crossbar, but the damage was done. City’s frustration was palpable.

The second half

After the break, the tide turned completely. Chelsea came out dominant, and it didn’t take long before Aggie Beever-Jones levelled the score with a composed finish. From that moment on, it was one-way traffic. Chelsea piled on the pressure, creating chance after chance — but Khiara Keating stood tall, producing a string of outstanding saves to keep City in it.

Against the run of play, City nearly snatched a winner. Kerolin again broke through and squared the ball back across goal, but Mary Fowler couldn’t connect, and Vivianne Miedema couldn’t bring it under control. A golden opportunity gone begging.

In the end, Chelsea’s strength in depth proved decisive. With the likes of Erin Cuthbert, Keira Walsh, Mayra Ramirez, Cat Macario and Mia Fishel all coming off the bench, the pressure mounted. And in stoppage time, it was Cuthbert who delivered the final blow — latching onto a loose ball to fire in the winner and seal a hard-fought 2–1 victory.
